Dicentra ‘Stuart Boothman’

Native Range: North America

The “Stuart Boothman” variety of the bleeding heart is a hybrid of two species of dicentra: Dicentra eximia and Dicentra formosa. The species are very similar and are often confused with one, another as they have only slight differences in their flower petals. Both species are native to the United States, the former to the Appalachian Mountains and the latter to the Pacific Coast. The Skagit chewed roots of Dicentra formosa to treat toothaches, and Stuart Boothman inherited the deep-pink flowers and gray-green foliage of this variety.
