Magnolia grandiflora

Native Range: North America

The southern magnolia is prized for its large, fragrant flowers that bloom amid glossy evergreen leaves. Native to the American South, magnolias rarely thrive in colder northern climates, making this tree unusual. A specimen planted in Brooklyn in 1885 at 679 Lafayette Avenue is designated a New York City landmark. It is only one of two trees that have received that honor and is the sole living example.
