Dryopteris marginalis

Native Range: North America

Not only is the marginal wood fern native to north America, but it is very likely to have grown on Manhattan prior to European contact. These ferns typically grow on rocks and stream banks. The name comes from the fact that the sori, the dots on the underside of the fronds that produce spores, grow on the edges, or margins, of the leaflets.
