Mahonia japonica

Native Range: Asia

Despite the name, Japanese mahonia are native to Taiwan and not Japan. The shrub produces new shoots regularly and maintains evergreen foliage. Its small flowers bloom in the fall and remain on display through spring, and then transform to dark blue fruits in the summer. Japanese mahonia’s leaves are spiky, lending it to use as a deterrent against unwanted garden visitors.
