Ginkgo biloba

Native Range: Asia

The ginkgo, which is identifiable by its uniquely fan-shaped leaves that turn bright yellow in autumn and by its pungent berries, is considered a living fossil, unchanged for more than 200 million years. Due to its ability to thrive despite poor air quality and confined growing spaces, it has become a quintessential city tree. Its resilience is perhaps best exemplified by the six ginkgo that survived the Hiroshima atomic bombing. Planted within two kilometers of the blast site, the trees were charred but recovered and are still living today.
