Maple Birch Clearing

Mellon’s garden is a bricolage of older, cared-for plants, and a variety of newly introduced features that expand the garden’s range of offerings and provide a beautiful experience throughout the year. The Maple Birch Clearing at the northern-most point is home to some of the oldest trees in the garden and promises a bountiful experiences in seasonality. This section features Japanese maples, whose leaves turn a heart-stopping red come fall, as well as Grey and River birch trees that are also in bloom in autumn. Varieties of blossoming Magnolia trees will greet visitors in the spring. All year long, low-growing perennials, shrubs, ground covers, and bulbs, offer much to be discovered beneath the towering shade canopies.
